  1. Athletic Ballroom Dances.

We are interested in the chosen theme because we are keen on athletic ballroom dances. The aim of our investigation is to find a reason why people attend dance clubs. Our work called «Athletic Ballroom Dances» is devoted to one of the most beautiful kinds of art and sport – dances. The reason of choosing this theme is connected with our dancing and with the fact that we spend all our free time dancing. And we know a lot about it.

Athletic ballroom dances have a unique history. They have gained popularity both as a way of rest and as an emulative sport. Ballroom dances are very popular all over the world; boys and girls attend dance clubs. People of all ages can go in for dancing. Dances are subdivided into 2 kinds: Latin and Standard. In our group everybody knows basic elements of these dances. There are a lot of dance clubs in Moscow (about 250). The most popular and famous ones are: Russky club, Feeria, Dinamo, Santi, Vdochnovenie, Academia, Ritm, Latinsky kvartal, Forum, Triada, Ludmila and Aleko. There are about 50-60 pairs in each club.

The problem of Athletic Ballroom dancing is: art or sport. I suppose it’s a combination of them. Their attractiveness and popularity are the main features of this genre. It’s one of the most spectacular sports. Athletic Ballroom dances and sport are connected with the level of skill shown at the competitions. The art part plays an important role too. It creates an image, spirituality and emotionality. Dancers must possess actor mastering. Also, smile plays a big role in dances too. If dancers smile, they relieve stress which quite often worsens their mood during all competitions.

The main financial problem of athletic ballroom dances is to purchase special costumes for dancing. The price is very expensive for magnificent costumes, professional footwear and cosmetics. Stones are often used as ornaments, but they cost a lot. Professionals face the following financial problems: the purchase of costumes and the payment for group and individual lessons. Also, you should buy a ticket to take part in the competitions.

October is associated with English tournaments all over the world. The most famous are: “Open London”, “Imperial” and “International Championships”.

“International Championships” is the oldest tournament in Great Britain. It often draws a lot of dancers from all over the world.

“Open Russian” is the most famous tournament in Russia. It attracts many famous dancers and big crowds of fans. But tickets for the participants are very expensive. Many dancers from each region of Russia come to “Open Russian”, even dancers from other countries. Dancers must have much emotion, smile to take good results.

Athletic Ballroom Dances are very popular. I think the reason of their popularity is their accessibility, beauty, spectacularity and attractiveness. In dance clubs children make new friends and they spend their free time there. For many people dancing is just a hobby, for others – a profession. Many trainers in the world make their money this way.

Having summed all the information we come to the conclusion that dances occupy the most part of people’s life. Dances are popular and attractive among different groups of people. Dances are an essential part of people’s life. We hope that our investigation contains all necessary information which will be useful for reports, for those, who want to devote their life to dancing.

Дискуссия (некоторые примеры вопросов учащихся)

  1. What in ballroom dances is sport and what is art?

  2. What difficulty do you face while dancing?

  3. You’ve enumerated Moscow dancing clubs. As you said before there are 250 clubs with 50-60 pairs in each club. Is it enough for young Muscovites?

  4. We all know that ballroom dances are very expensive and a lot of young people can’t afford to attend them. What should we do to make this «expensive sport» accessible to our youth?

  5. One cannot deny that dancing is a great aesthetic means of communication among young people. Do you think it is necessary to organize dance festivals among schools?

  6. Does dancing influence our health?

  7. What do you feel while dancing?

  8. Have you ever taken part in the competitions? Have you ever got prizes?

Вторая группа участников проекта приступает к обсуждению проблемы

«Extreme sports : safe or dangerous for people’s health».

Our work is devoted to extreme sports. The aim of our project is to show their peculiarity and uniqueness. While working on the research we applied for such methods as analysis, compassion. We used the material from the Internet, magazines, video.

If man lacks bright moments of life, he gets engrossed in extreme sports. For the sake of competition with nature a person sacrifices his life and his health. Physical abilities of man in extreme sports are used to the full extent.

Extreme people try to conquer the tops of modern sports: skateboarding, snowboarding, paragliding, windsurfing, diving, hot-dog skiing. The popularity of extreme sports is growing very fast. We think so because extreme sports are very complicated and unusual. They draw a lot of people. Extreme sports attract teenagers. The younger generation is in search of their own heroes, they want to have examples for imitation. Young people try to realize themselves in extreme sports. A majority of sportsmen are optimists, so their bitter failures stimulate them to find a new way to victory. Our world is constantly changing. People try to invent new sports. They improve their body and strengthen their spirit. They test themselves in extreme sports. They appreciate their potential abilities to a great extent. We tried to define a modern phenomenon «extreme sport». We tried to tell you about young people’s hobbies and leisure.

One of the most popular kinds of extreme sport is skateboarding. Skateboarding is a young sport, but no one truly knows its origin. Many stories revolve around the invention of skateboarding. Some people believe that skating began on the surfing beaches of California, the USA in the 50’s by surfers who put roller skaters on a piece of wood. The origin of skateboarding is reflected in the design of the earlier skateboards which looked like surfboards. The boards were narrow and much shorter than boards now. Teenagers and young people take part in International amateur competitions.

The last extreme sport we would like to tell you about is roller-skating. Teenagers spend hours after school and on weekends in line-skating. Skating isn’t a torturous as running. It’s easy to learn, the movements are fairly natural, and it’s fun. It is also a great aerobic workout. While skating you can burn 285 to 450 calories.

Which of you roller skates? Why?

Ответы учащихся были следующими:

  1. It clears a head and relaxes me. It sharpens my sense of adventure.

  2. It is a great way to meet friends;

  3. I want to stay in shape

  4. I make new friends

  5. Both my mind and my body feel great

  6. It’s the great workout

In conclusion it should be emphasized that sport improves our health. We hope our project will attract pupils’ attention to going in for extreme sports.

SNOWBOARDING

Another kind of extreme sport that we want to tell you about is snowboarding.

Snowboarding is a relatively new sport which can be visually compared to skateboarding and surfing except done on snow. The rider stands on the board with his/her left or right foot forward, facing one side of the board. The feet are attached to the board via high-back.

Some sports which have overlap in skills to snowboarding include: skateboarding, surfing, water skiing and certainly snow skiing.

Extreme snowboarding involves making your own way from the top of a mountain to the bottom using only your snowboard. In the process spectacular jumps and free falls are often undertaken. To get to the top of the mountain the pros usually get a lift from a helicopter.

What is the history of snowboarding?

Snowboarding became popular only in the last 10 years. It was pioneered in the late 70's by a small group including Jake Burton Carpenter, Chuck Barefoot and Tom Sims. Most of these pioneers now have their own snowboard companies. All of the early pioneers were heavily influenced by surfboarding.

` Early "snowboard" boots were Sorel shells with ski boot type bladders. It was obvious that these early boots did not supply adequate support for the ankle and inhibited control of the boards. The first hard-shell "snowboard" boots were in fact ski boots. It didn't take long for the first true hard-shell boot to be produced before the end of the eighties.

MOUNTAINEERING

It is well known that mountaineering is a very thrilling pastime. Many people who enjoy this kind of sport have qualified for the mountaineering badge.

Mountaineering is a kind of sport which requires not only strength and endurance but daring as well. For the expert mountaineers the true goal of mountain climbing is to climb safely in dangerous places.

Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment.

Mountaineering is a kind of sport which people of all ages go in for. A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. They may take more time than younger men, but they climb with more skill and less waste to effort. And they experience their equal enjoyment.

Dialogue «Mountaineering»

In the Internet we knew that the team from Kazakhstan: Maxut Zhumauev, Denis Urobko, Alexey Raspopov, Vassily Pitsov and Thomas Human summated Shisha Pangma (8.046 m.)

We connected with Denis Urobko and interviewed him:

  • Hi, Denis! How are you now? I’m all right, thanks.

  • My congratulations to you!

  • Thank you.

  • When did you start your climb?

  • On the 10th of October.

  • What was your climb like?

  • Oh, it was a really strong climb. We managed to climb the summit despite the wind. Now I am sure that the Pole of Wind of the World is situated exactly in Shisha Pangma.

  • Did you meet other teams on your way?

  • Yes. When we started our attempt we met around 12 teams going down.

  • Where did you have a rest?

  • In Advanced Base Camp at the altitude of 5,600 m. Then we established the camp at 6.900 m. The wind was strong.

  • How could you manage to reach the summit?

  • The summit was so close but we didn’t have a chance to get there.11 hours struggling with the wind and we are at the op of Shisha Pangma.

  • Where was the climb especially dangerous?

  • On the ridge between the Central and Main Summits.

  • What are your wishes to young mountaineers?

  • Conquer the summits, it is thrilling.

  • I wish you a great success in conquering other summits.

  • Thank you.

SCUBA DIVING

My favourite sport is diving. It has gained ground nowadays. A lot of young people become engrossed in it. It has become a form of entertainment and even a hobby.

Diving gives you a great opportunity to become a sea traveller, to enjoy exotic sea plants, fish, coral reefs, sea shells. I’d like to take delight of the beauty of the sea world.

Professional divers search for the ruins of ancient ships, boats. It’s exciting.

If you are interested in scuba diving, there are a lot of dive centers at your disposal. For example: Dive Center «Aquamarine» offers some unique programs and services in the Crimea. You have a chance to dive in the most luxurious places of the Black Sea.
Лидер группы обращается к участникам проекта: - You have heard a lot about snowboarding, skateboarding, roller-skating. But what new extreme sports are popular nowadays?

Учащиеся рассказывают о следующих видах современного экстремального спорта:

  • windsurfing

  • paragliding

  • hot-dog skiing

  • hang-gliding

Дискуссия (некоторые примеры вопросов учащихся)

  1. Which extreme sports do you prefer?

  2. Though extreme sports are dangerous people go in for them. Why do they risk their health? Is mountaineering “a team game” or a sport of individuals? What is your point of view?

  3. Can people who go in for extreme sports be cruel, aggressive, dishonest? Can they offend weak people? What is your point of view?

Третья группа участников проекта приступает к обсуждению проблемы «Animals in sport»

The subject of our investigation is the problem of using animals in sports. There are several kinds of sports, where animals can take part (for example: horse-racing, horse-riding, dog-racing, even races for donkeys). But when we hear, «animals in sport» at first we usually imagine horses. So the aim of our project is to change people’s mind in order to show the quietness of horse-riding and the cruelness of horse-racing.

Horse-racing and horse-riding are sports with horses. A horse for Tatar and, in particular, for Bashkir people in all times was the companion, friend and the most reliable bread-winner. Therefore in sabantui the most interesting part of the program is horse-racing. Boys of 10-15 years take part racing. The horses for horse-racing are prepared long before the holiday: they are taken care of, fed and cherished. When sabantui is close already, the horses’ legs are warmed. The winner is awarded with a prize a fat sheep (or something else) and the delighted audience.

The English are also fond of horse-racing. A lot of people are interested in races and risk money on the horse they think will win. Most races can be watched on TV and of course people don’t have to go far to bet on the races, because there are betting shops everywhere.

Horse-racing is sometimes called the sport of kings, because it is an expensive hobby to own a racehorse, but interest in racing isn’t restricted to the rich. Gambling-especially on horses – is a part of many people’s lives in Britain. There are 2 kinds of horse-racing: flat-racing and steeple-chasing. The Grand National is the most exciting steeple-chase in Britain. It was instituted in 1839 and given its present name in 1847. The course is over 7 kilometers and includes 30 jumps, of which 14 are jumped twice. It is a very dangerous race, in which jockeys and horses often seriously hurt.

The annual race for the Derby is another popular horse race. It is a flat race, held on the course at Epson Downs (south of London) and it takes place in June. The race is named after the Earl for the Derby, who first organized such a race in 1780. People say that the Derby is a cruel race.

HORSE-RIDING.

In recent years it has become a sport for everybody. It’s a good healthy outdoor sport and it can be recommended to anyone – housewives, tired businessmen and hardworking school pupils for riding is never out of the season – it is a hobby that one can follow both in winter and in summer. Nowadays more people can afford to own a horse or to join a riding is also pastime that the whole family can enjoy. They enjoy the beauty of mountains, fields, forests, where they can ride a horse. They make new friends and become the part of nature. They spend a wonderful time while riding a horse.

In comparison with horse-racing horse-riding isn’t violent or fast. Learning to ride should be a slow and carefully planned process, studying first the horse as a living personality. One of the first steps in learning to ride is to get as much knowledge and experience as you can of the horse, his personality and his physical characteristics. The horse is an extremely sensitive animal by nature, and sometimes very nervous. In horse-riding a horse and a man should become as a whole.

In conclusion I want to say, that on the one hand horse-races are interesting and popular, but on the other hand they are cruel, violent and dangerous both for riders and horses. So we are for horse-riding and peaceful kinds of sport.

The project «Our future horse-riding club»

While we were working on our project a beautiful idea struck our mind and we decided to organize a riding club. This club will be situated for example: in” Kuskovo.” Pupils, who are determined to go in for horse-riding, will make an attempt at taking care, feeding and riding a horse. We have to find some professional riders, who will teach pupils to ride a horse in the open air. Also they will teach them to take care of horses. But there is a problem: we have no money to organize this club: we have to buy horses, to have a building for horses, to pay money to professional riders, so we need a sponsor. But we hope that our idea is possible!

Dogs in sport

There were many dogs named hunting-dogs and rat-dogs. Manchester-Terriers were useful in the ports. People put rats in cages and terriers killed them. These dogs cost a lot. In 1862 Terrier’’Jacob’’ killed one hundred rats for 5 minutes 28 seconds and later this show was forbidden.

Dog races were born in England, too. The show took place in summer or in autumn . It was a very wonderful show. Many kinds of dogs took place in the races .

Дискуссия (некоторые примеры вопросов учащихся)

  1. Which of you would like to go in for horse-racing?

  2. What prevents you from doing it?

  3. Is horse-riding a sport only or a unity of an animal and a sportsman?

  4. If there were a lot of horse-riding clubs in Moscow would they attract teenagers to go in for this sport?

  5. Are a horse and a rider partners?

Четвертая группа участников проекта приступает к обсуждению проблемы «Sport in our school»

The theme of our project is ‘‘Sport in our school’’. We have chosen this theme because it is very interesting to know what boys and girls think about sport. National wisdom says: «To lose health- to lose everything». So why are we ill and why do we lose our health? We cannot deny that the problem of health has become essential nowadays. We should keep our bodies in perfect health. If our body suffers from any disorder, our mind suffers with it. We begin to feel unhappy and we are unfit to perform our duties in the social life.

Exercising every day helps to work, to eat and to sleep well. That is why P.E. is a necessary subject at school. We have got 2 P.E. classes a week. Our school is well equipped. 2 gyms are at pupils’ disposal. The training gym is a very interesting place. It has got a lot of sports facilities. For young pupils there is a small gym. Pupils go in for athletics, gymnastics and play different games. There are different sports clubs in our school: Children go in for basketball, football and ballroom dances.

We interviewed the pupils of several classes. We asked them the following questions:

  1. Do you go in for sports?

  2. How does sport help you in your studies?

  3. What kind of sport do you go in for?

  4. What sport would you like to go in for?

  5. What do you think about remedial gymnastics?

We interviewed the pupils. Many of them go in for swimming, hockey, dancing, aerobics , shaping. Others would like to go in for boxing cycling, skating Лидер группы обращается к участникам проекта с вопросом: Why do you go in for sport? Ответы учащихся свелись к следующим положениям:

  • To be healthy

  • To be slim

  • To be well organized

  • To be strong –willed

  • To be successful

REMEDIAL GYMNASTICS

Our sports lessons are often in the swimming pool or in the gym. At the swimming pool lessons we learn how to swim .We feel gay and happy. P. E. lessons are fun. They give us a flow of energy. We do a lot of exercises that help us to be strong and more disciplined.

A lot of pupils who don’t go in for sports and seldom attend P.E. classes are unhealthy and often ill. Remedial gymnastics will be very useful. Our pupils are often tired. They can’t sit in the proper way. They become absent-minded. We came to the conclusion that remedial gymnastics is necessary at school.

We offer 2 or 3 classes of remedial gymnastics a week .They will last 30 minutes. Special instructors will be present in the gyms, in the swimming pool. We are sure that it will help pupils to work harder, to be more attentive, to study better.

Дискуссия (некоторые примеры вопросов учащихся)

  1. Why don’t many pupils attend a swimming pool?

  2. How can you encourage pupils to go in for sports and attend P.E. classes?

  3. How can you imagine the Day of Health in our school?

Участники конференции приступают к обсуждению итогов переписки со своими сверстниками.

Лидеры каждой из групп сделали следующие заключения по изучаемым темам:

It is well known that professional sport is one of the ways to earn a lot of money. Many sporting events have become money-making because they are popular. This phenomenon is harmful for sport because it kills sporting spirit. Sport must serve peace, friendship, cooperation among people.

Extreme sports are very popular nowadays. They are the indicator of courage, endurance, the best physical and moral qualities of man. It trains not only the body but also the mind.

People go in for sport to keep health and fit, to stay in a good shape, to become more organized, better disciplined in their daily activities. It helps people to be successful, to become strong-willed, reserved, patient, hard-working and persistent.

In conclusion we want to say that on the one hand horse- racing is a very interesting and popular sport, but on the other it is very cruel, so we want riders to be more patient to animals, to love and respect them. And we stand for horse- riding and other peaceful kinds of sport.

Finally, it should be emphasized that sport has become an essential part of our daily life. Individual trainings, sports events, competitions and team games bring fun to people and unite the society. They make our life much brighter.

  • формирование положительной мотивации учащихся к углубленному изучению английского языка;

  • развитие у школьников полезных навыков по поиску, отбору и анализу большого объема лингвистической информации, работы с источниками, в том числе и на английском языке, подготовке, оформлению и публичной презентации своих докладов;

  • совершенствование всех видов речевой деятельности, пополнение лексики классическими и современными фразеологизмами ,придание языку более современное и живое звучание;
